A volt is the SI unit of electromotive force
or electric potential, symbol V. A small
battery has a potential of 1½ volts, the
domestic electricity supply in the UK is 240
volts (110 volts in the USA), and a
high-tension transmission line may carry up
to 765,000 volts.
